Joy! by Gwyn Oakes

Nehemiah 8: 10 tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. Joy is an essential element or attribute of a Christian. When we live in harmony with God's will and have a sincere desire to follow the instructions of His Word, the resulting effect is true, heartfelt joy.
The joy of the Lord acts as a fortress to guard us from the troubles and temptations of daily life. It also motivates us to have faith for perseverance. Far too many Christians seem to have no joy in their lives. Sin caused a separation between God and mankind in the Garden of Eden and still does.
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:2).
What was the joy set before Him? That His people might be free from sin and enjoy being in His presence. He endured the shame and the pain of the cross to bring joy into our lives. The joy of the Lord is based upon reconciliation with God and the presence of His Spirit in our lives.
We still have to deal with the issues of life, but God desires to take our cares. He said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30).
A yoke is not an added burden. When teamed up with another, it makes the burden lighter, the load easier to carry. The Lord wants us to team up with Him. The trials and cares you carry will be borne with His help and grace.
It is not life that makes us happy -- it is what's inside of us. When He filled me with His Spirit, I found the joy that my heart craved. The kingdom of God is not "meat and drink," or things of this world, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost!
